What is eczema?
Eczema, or dermatitis, no matter which type, occurs as an itchy rash on the skin. Though the exact cause of eczema is unknown, it is a treatable and manageable condition. Eczema often occurs in families, especially those with cases of allergies or asthma. It can occur on any part of the body, but most commonly appears on the hands, face, knees, wrists or feet. Breakouts or flare-ups usually cause the skin to be dry and very itchy.

Are there different types of eczema?
Eczema takes several forms, including:

  • Atopic eczema: The most common type of eczema, atopic dermatitis is often heredity and flare-ups are usually due to some kind of trigger. Those triggers include seasonal, dust and animal allergies, fragrances in soaps or detergents, extreme changes in temperature, certain types of clothing and teething in babies.
  • Contact eczema: Contact eczema occurs due to the skin coming into contact with certain materials or substances.
  • Seborrheic eczema: Seborrheic eczema often occurs in people otherwise not diagnosed with the condition.
  • Stasis eczema: Stasis eczema occurs when there is a problem with the veins, often appearing on the legs.
  • Dyshidrotic eczema: Dyshidrotic eczema occurs mainly in women’s feet and hands, causing a blistering rash. This type of eczema can also occur in men though it is less common.

How is eczema treated?
Eczema treatment most often comes in the form of lotions or creams. These can be over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams or stronger medicated ointments prescribed by your Peoria doctor. Antihistamines also help ease itching. In severe cases, prescription drugs to regulate the body’s response to certain triggers help prevent flare-ups.
