All Acne Isn't Treated the Same

Applying a dab or two of over-the-counter cream to your pimples every day is often effective in treating acne, but if your acne is severe or stubborn, it may be time to try a different type of treatment. Dr. Vernon Thomas Mackey, your Peoria, AZ dermatologist at Advanced AcneDesert Dermatology, shares information on several types of acne treatments offered by skin doctors.

Topical medications

These medications are available in lotion, gel and cream form and are applied directly to your skin. They unclog your pores and prevent them from becoming clogged with oil from your skin. Common types of topical medications include tretinoin, tazarotene and adapalene.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are available in both topical and oral form and are often recommended if topical medications alone don't improve your acne. Topical antibiotics kill the bacteria that contribute to the formation of acne and also help reduce redness. In some cases, topical medications just don't do enough to get rid of your acne. If you have moderate to severe acne, your skin doctor may recommend that you take an oral antibiotic for three or four months, such as doxycycline, tetracycline or minocycline, in addition to using topical medications.

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin pills may be recommended if you have severe acne that doesn't get better after you try several other types of treatment. Although the medication is very effective, it's also very strong. Your Peoria dermatologist will monitor you very closely while you take it. Use of a reliable form of birth control is recommended for women because the drug can cause birth defects.

Oral contraceptives

Hormonal changes in adolescent girls and women can trigger the production of excess sebum, an oily substance that helps keep skin soft. Excess sebum production tends to clog pores and cause acne pimples and cysts. Oral contraceptives that feature a combination of progestin and estrogen can help reduce sebum production and decrease acne flare ups.

Light therapy

Dermatologists use a special blue light to kill bacteria in your oil glands. Treatment decreases acne lesions and the inflammation that causes redness.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels take off the top layers of your skin, removing active acne spots. They are helpful in improving the turnover of skin cells and preventing your pores from being clogged with oil.
